Level 3 Award in Outdoor First Aid (RQF)

 

 

 

The content of this course is matched with the Institute for Outdoor Learning Statement of Good Practice on Outdoor First Aid at Band 3. 

 

This qualification consists of two units, covering outdoor emergency action and outdoor incident management.

 

Who is this qualification for?

This qualification is designed to provide learners with the knowledge and skills to respond to emergency first-aid situations in outdoor environments, where professional medical assistance may be delayed. It is particularly suited to those working in unsupported outdoor roles, such as outdoor activity leaders, instructors and expedition assessors.

 

How long will it take?

To complete this qualification learners should expect to undertake 16 hours of learning, typically over two days.

 

Topics covered

The qualification covers knowledge such as the scope of first aid in the outdoors, assessing emergency situations safely in the outdoors, interpreting vital sign information, responding to incidents involving unresponsive casualties, responding to incidents involving choking casualties, responding to incidents involving blood loss, applying incident management and casualty assessment principles, responding to incidents involving limb injuries, responding to incidents involving a casualty with a head, neck or torso injury and providing first aid to a casualty with a suspected major illness.

 

Assessment method

This qualification is assessed by a practical demonstration and a multiple choice exam.

 

All successful students will be issued with an Outdoor First Aid Certificate which lasts for a period of 3 years, along with a wallet-sized plastic card detailing their qualifications. In addition to this, it is recommended that learners refresh their knowledge annually.

 

This qualification is suitable for learners over the age of 16.
